Duemler has incorporated plein air techniques into her way of painting. She finds that by painting from direct observation she can better express the feeling of light, colors and shadows - the feeling of the place. When not teaching, Duemler travels throughout the United States, creating studies of the places she visits. These later provide her with a foundation for larger paintings.
She earned her undergraduate art degree and Master of Fine Arts degree from University of Wisconsin - Madison, studying with professors Carol Pylant and David Becker. Since graduation, she has also studied with artists Scott Christensen, Matt Smith, Skip Whitcomb, Daniel Gerhartz and Carolyn Anderson. Her influences include American artists Edward Hopper and Fairfield Porter, as well as Dutch painter Jan Vermeer.
